I am a free-lance translator with 25+ years of experience translating high-tech, industrial, and technical marketing documents for direct customers and translation companies.
Born and raised in Italy, I have engineering degrees and I have worked as R&D engineer in both Italy and US. As a free-lancer, I have translated a wide range of technical and technical marketing materials - including ads, brochures, catalogs, hardware/software documentation, company newsletters, product guides (installation/operation manuals), press releases, slide presentations, video scripts, and web sites.
I work in many technical fields, including automotive, computer hardware/software, engines, gear drives, heavy machinery and vehicles, high-tech medical instruments, hydraulic systems, machine/power tools, motors, networking, optical instruments, packaging, pumps, measurement/monitoring electronic instruments, test equipment, turbines, and uninterruptible power supplies.
The terminological accuracy of my translations is grounded in years of engineering study and work in both Italy and the United States. My extensive technical background allows me to quickly grasp new concepts and technologies. I can find, read and understand related documents written in Italian by specialists. Possessing a sound understanding of the concepts, I can choose the correct technical terminology, regardless of the complexity of your documents.

Services
I specialize in high-tech, industrial, technical marketing, and corporate communications translations from English into Italian. I have 25+ years of experience as freelancer translating for direct clients (corporations/organizations) and translation agencies in the US and in Europe, either solo or managing a team of translators.
Any article - or part of it - published by Roberto Crivello can be reproduced provided his name and the source of the article (that is, this website) are mentioned. This is a work in progress. It is a collection of difficult words that appear often in technical documents. However, these words do not have an instant translation, are usually translated incorrectly or upon further examination give insight into linguistic/translation issues. I am the author of two training modules on technical translation into Italian, written for ICoN (Italian Culture on the Net) Group.
The best way to assess the quality of your translated document is to get comments from representatives of your products or services in Italy. Your Italian reps will see at a glance if a translator has a good technical background and writes with the style needed for local clients. Please take a look at the following testimonials.

... your strong technical background is invaluable. Even with a technical background, technology is constantly changing and you are a translator who insists on understanding before translating. (Unfortunately not all translators are so conscientious.)
...As one of our clients who recently reviewed a translation that you completed said, We learned from our Italian sales company that your Italian translator does his job very well.

Hi Roberto,
I just wanted to drop you a note thanking you for the excellent Italian translation work you have done for our company. The last project we did was extremely difficult due to the very technical nature of the text. We were very impressed with how comfortable you were with the text. You showed an excellent ability to cut through the engineer speak of the manual. The client's European office gave your translation an excellent rating.

Dear Roberto,
I just had a phone conversation with the Project Manager at Rollerblade in Italy... The Rollerblade Project Manager commended Prisma International for the high-quality translation of the Rollerblade Handbook we were able to produce. He said (and I quote) he was impressed by it, as Rollerblade Italy regularly employs Translation Agencies in Italy and Europe in general, but none of them has ever been able to produce the quality Prisma did, linguistically as well as technically. Since you were the translator for this project, I would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for your quality work and your professional services.
